If you know our founder, JoDee Curtis, you know she’s always chasing the next challenge. Her love of change is one of the things that led her to become a consultant! We asked her a few questions about how she built and continues to grow her business and why networking is key for consultants.
PbPI: What made you decide to become an independent workforce consultant?
JoDee: I decided to go into consulting because of three things I love. One, change! Two, the idea and vision part of a project (then moving on to the next one). And third, working with organizations looking for opportunities to create a more JoyPowered® environment for their teams.
PbPI: What do you love about what you do?
JoDee: Flexibility, creating JoyPowered® organizations, taking on new challenges, and growing our team!
PbPI: Why is having a solid network of other people professionals important to you?
JoDee: I love sharing ideas with others – especially entrepreneurs! Having a network gives me the opportunity to learn from other professionals. I also think it’s important to be able to refer others who are more specialized in an area than my team is, closer geographically to a potential client, or offering services Purple Ink doesn’t.
PbPI: How do you manage your time as a busy people professional?
JoDee: Fridays are my “catch up days” – I work from home and try to greatly limit the number of appointments I have that day. I’m also pretty fanatical about my calendar. I color code appointments based on whether they’re personal, scheduled appointments, holds for projects or prep, or catch up time.
PbPI: How do you avoid stress and burnout?
JoDee: I love massages and pedicures. Both of them reduce my stress greatly!
PbPI: What advice do you have for others who are considering becoming workforce consultants?
JoDee: Be open to change. Know that it’s an equal balance of business development and actually consulting. Invoice early and quickly. It’s not for everyone, but if you think it’s right, do it!
